Inspired by FIU – Driven by Passion – Venezuelan Violinist Pays It Forward

June 2024 - FIU alumnus José Luis Reyes Kapoudjiàn, who came to FIU from Caracas, Venezuela, states that “FIU's generous teaching assistantship provided me with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to come to the US and develop my talent as an artist." As concertmaster of the FIU Symphony Orchestra, José mentored and lead other students. He now works to establish programs and platforms that nurture young talents, foster inclusive communities and catalyze positive change. He is presently leading music programs at art institutions and schools in Boston, MA, while maintaining an active career in violin performance. 

Erasmus+ Partner in Poznan, Poland, Hosts FIU Professor

June 2024 - Nipesh Pradhananga, Associate Professor and Associate Chair in the Moss Department of Construction Management, College of Engineering & Computing, was awarded an Erasmus+ teaching mobility grant with our European partner Poznań University of Technology (PUT), Poznań, Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland. During the week-long exchange, he taught classes, met with students and discussed with academic leaders how FIU and PUT can continue to collaborate. 

International Students @ FIU: Meet Humayra Sultana, Doctoral Student in Public Affairs

May 2024 - Humayra completed her bachelor’s and master's at Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in Disaster and Human Security Management. At FIU, she recently was a Research Assistant at the Extreme Events Institute. She is now participating in two NSF-funded projects focused on making communities disaster resilient focused on Miami, and post-disaster relocation issues in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria in 2017. Humayra is a true FIU change-maker! 

Professor Assefa Melesse Takes Scientific Data to Policy Makers as Jefferson Science Fellow

December 2023 - Hosted by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Agency for International Development, Professor Assefa Melesse is one of nine 2023-2024 Jefferson Science Fellows. He works with the Office of the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and other agencies focused on climate security and diplomacy. Melesse expects to gain support from U.S. companies for a plastics reduction accord and contribute to a climate guide for U.S. embassies and consulates to use with local leaders. 

FIU Fulbright Student Connecting in Bahrain

November 2023 - FIU graduate student, Susana Fuertes, is spending the Fall 2023 semester as a Fulbright student researcher at the Bahrain Polytechnic University and recently represented FIU at The Six Gulf for Business Incubators and Accelerators Conference. Susana met with business leaders and women entrepreneurs from Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates among others. While there, Susana took Arabic classes and helped women entrepreneurs with their social media accounts.
