What is Erasmus+?
Erasmus+ is the European Union’s flagship programme dedicated to education, training, youth, and sport. Running from 2021 to 2027, Erasmus+ aims to enrich lives and open minds with an estimated budget of €26.2 billion, nearly doubling the funding compared to its predecessor programme from 2014-2020. An additional €2.2 billion is contributed by the EU external cooperation instrument, emphasizing the programme's expansive reach.
Supporting Lifelong Learning and Mobility
A significant 70% of the Erasmus+ budget is allocated to support mobility opportunities for individuals across all stages of life. This investment is designed to enhance educational, social, personal, and professional development by improving knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Participants in Erasmus+ mobility programmes gain increased employability, self-confidence, independence, curiosity, and innovation, fostering a deeper understanding of different cultures and building a strong sense of European identity.
Fostering Cooperation and Innovation
The remaining 30% of the budget is dedicated to cooperation projects and policy development activities. These initiatives enable organizations to gain international experience, strengthen their capacities, and develop innovative approaches. By promoting the exchange of good practices and networking, Erasmus+ plays a crucial role in bolstering resilience and supporting recovery and innovation in education, training, youth, and sport.
Aligned with European Priorities
Erasmus+ supports the European Education Area, the Digital Education Action Plan, and the European Skills Agenda. It also contributes to the European Pillar of Social Rights and implements the EU Youth Strategy 2019-2027, while fostering a European dimension in sport. The programme offers mobility and cooperation opportunities in higher education, vocational education and training, adult and school education (including early childhood education and care), youth, and sport.
Promoting Inclusion, Green and Digital Transitions
Erasmus+ places a strong emphasis on social inclusion, supporting those with fewer opportunities, including individuals with disabilities, educational difficulties, migrant backgrounds, and those from rural and remote areas. The programme also invests in forward-looking study fields such as climate change, digital skills, clean energy, artificial intelligence, and health sciences. Additionally, it supports flagship initiatives like European Universities, Vocational Centres of Excellence, and DiscoverEU, promoting a healthy lifestyle through grassroots sport projects.
Expanding Opportunities Beyond Europe
Erasmus+ extends mobility and cooperation opportunities beyond Europe, providing cooperation, capacity building, exchanges, networking, and policy support for organizations and reforms in education, training, youth, and sport. The programme seeks to ensure equal opportunities and reach out to people of different cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
Digital and Simplified Implementation
Aligned with the Digital Education Action Plan, Erasmus+ is committed to developing accessible and high-quality digital learning. It enhances the capacity of educators and youth workers to use digital tools and content, promoting distance and blended learning. The programme will be significantly digitalized and simplified for participants through initiatives like the European Student Card and a revamped IT architecture.
Leading the Green Transition
In line with the European Green Deal, Erasmus+ encourages participants to opt for low-carbon transport alternatives to flying. Funding will support the development of sustainability and climate action knowledge, equipping Europeans with the skills needed to create sustainable societies and economies.
Mobility Opportunities for All
Erasmus+ aims to involve about 10 million individuals in mobility activities abroad, offering experiences that build self-confidence, soft skills, cultural awareness, and professional networks. Higher education students can engage in Blended Intensive Programmes, combining online learning with short-term physical mobility abroad. Vocational training learners have increased opportunities for short-term and long-term mobility, and the programme supports school pupils, adult learners, and youth participation activities.
Cooperation Projects and Policy Support
Erasmus+ enhances cooperation and exchange of practices through projects that promote the use of new technologies, innovative teaching methods, and non-formal learning. Small-scale Partnerships offer simple and accessible entry points for new and small organizations. Initiatives like European Universities, Centres of Vocational Excellence, and Erasmus Teachers Academies aim to boost quality and inclusiveness in education and training.
Support for Policy Development
The programme supports policy development and cooperation at the EU level, contributing to national reforms in education, training, youth, and sport. Jean Monnet Actions will continue to foster knowledge and awareness of EU matters, expanding opportunities for teaching and learning about the EU beyond universities to schools and other institutions.
