This 6-week online institute brings together 16 leadership teams from US and international higher education institutions of all types to integrate Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) virtual exchange into their curricula and internationalization plans.
About the Institute
The Institute will enable participating teams to design goal-oriented Action Plans for sustaining and expanding a COIL virtual exchange program at their home institution over the long term. Teams will:
- Evaluate their institution’s context and capacity for sustaining and expanding COIL virtual exchange
- Identify ways diverse campus stakeholders and units will collaborate to support the program’s success
- Connect to new international partners and link COIL virtual exchange partnerships to other internationalization activities
- Identify key strategies for facilitating effective professional development, student learning assessment, and program evaluation
Overview
The 6-week Institute will involve:
- Six 90-minute synchronous “Information” sessions conducted over Zoom, with each session linked to a section of the Action Plan
- Four 90-minute synchronous “Connection” sessions conducted over Zoom, with each session involving breakout discussions with international COIL Coordinators and other leaders from the field
- One 45-minute team "Consulting" session with one of the Institute's facilitators
- Institutional team planning between sessions

Who should attend?
The Institute will accept COIL virtual exchange leadership teams from the same institution. Content is geared toward US and non-US institutions with some experience with COIL virtual exchange and a demonstrated committed to sustaining and expanding faculty and student engagement over the long term. We seek institutions that aim to take a program to scale in part through dedicated human resources.
Successful Institute teams are comprised of members with diverse operational and leadership capacities. Teams might include: a Senior International Officer or other international education leader; a high-level academic leader such as Vice Provost, Dean, Chair, Center or Program director; educational technology personnel or instructional designer; teaching and learning center professional; and/or faculty members.
