COIL Design

  • Pre-COIL Preparation

    Crossing Borders Education Resources

    Link: Crossing Borders Education Resources

Why it’s useful: Crossing Borders Education offers a wide variety of free instructional toolkits, films, and quote cards that you can use to prepare students for intercultural communication and collaboration. These can be used to set the stage for success prior to or during students’ first synchronous or asynchronous encounter with international peers.

    Making Group Contracts

Link: Making Group Contracts (University of Waterloo)

Why it’s useful: Contracts provide support and structure for groups as they work through their COIL projects and model professional skills. The process of developing a contract involves asking “how will we work together?” This question may reveal deeper layers of perspective and is a good follow up to an initial icebreaker.

    Dialogue Agreements

Why it’s useful: This film demonstrates the process of developing an intercultural dialogue agreement and presents fundamental principles of intercultural dialogue.
