These can be used to set the stage for success prior to or during students’ first synchronous or asynchronous encounter with international peers.

Making Group Contracts

Why it’s useful: Contracts provide support and structure for groups as they work through their COIL projects and model professional skills. The process of developing a contract involves asking “how will we work together?” This question may reveal deeper layers of perspective and is a good follow up to an initial icebreaker.

Dialogue Agreements

Why it’s useful: This film demonstrates the process of developing an intercultural dialogue agreement and presents fundamental principles of intercultural dialogue.

Building Cultural Competence: Innovative Activities and Models by Darla Deardorff & Kate Berardo

• Why it's useful: This comprehensive book contains dozens of intercultural building exercises (many can be used for icebreakers!) for teams of all sizes. The book is broken down into nine sections and each section contains activities and tools focused on a unique aspect of cultural competence. Example sections include: Navigate Identity, Build Global Teams, Communicate Successfully, etc.

• Why it's useful: The Intercultural Learning Hub is an on-line space for those who mentor others--educators, coaches, trainers, facilitators--in intercultural competence, multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion, social justice, international education, and/or study abroad.

• Netiquette is a set of guidelines that will help you demonstrate appropriate online behaviours. Netiquette is important in the online environment to maintain the professional standards of behaviours that you are expected to demonstrated in the traditional classroom. Netiquette can help you prevent miscommunications and collaborate with your peers online. Diversity Abroad

Diversity Abroad inspires and supports educators, policy makers, industry professionals and other stakeholders in leveraging global educational programs to support the academic success, interpersonal development and career readiness of students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.

Beginning on page 17 of their 2021 Global Impact Exchange report, the article--Approaching Virtual Exchange from an Equity Lens-- provides provoking considerations when designing Virtual Exchange and COIL programs.

Make sure to periodically check their website for professional development opportunities, publications, research, and more centered on DEI in international education such as COIL.

Virtual Exchange and Underrepresented Student Populations: Challenges and Barriers for Hispanic Students in Higher Education

This research publication by FIU professors Dr. Maria Marino and Dr. Stephanie Delgado and sponsored by the Stevens Initiative explores the experiences of Hispanics in higher education who participate in COIL programs to create opportunities that can lessen inequity. Why a language acknowledgment? It is a simple but meaningful way of recognizing the linguistic diversity embedded in the COIL Virtual Exchange activities (sessions with students, conference settings, public events, gatherings, etc.) Learn more.
