COIL Virtual Exchange Leadership Institute: January 17- February 21, 2023

This 6-week online institute will bring together 16 leadership teams from US and international higher education institutions to integrate Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) virtual exchange into their curricula and internationalization plans.

About the Institute

The Institute will enable participating teams to design goal-oriented Action Plans for sustaining and expanding a COIL virtual exchange program at their home institution over the long term. Teams will:

  • Evaluate their institution’s context and capacity for sustaining and expanding COIL virtual exchange
  • Identify ways diverse campus stakeholders and units will collaborate to support the program’s success
  • Connect to potential international partners and link COIL virtual exchange partnerships to other internationalization activities
  • Identify key strategies for facilitating effective professional development, student learning assessment, and program evaluation

The 6-week Institute will involve:

  • Six 90-minute synchronous “Information” sessions conducted over Zoom, with each session linked to a section of the Action Plan
  • Four 90-minute synchronous “Connection” sessions conducted over Zoom, with each session involving individual institutional consultations with the Institute facilitators and breakout discussions with leaders from the field.
  • Institutional team planning between sessions

For more information on the Institute's content, view the 2021 Agenda. The 2023 Institute Agenda will be released in December 2022.

Who should attend?

The institute will accept COIL virtual exchange leadership teams comprised of 2 or 3 members from the same institution. Content is geared toward US and non-US institutions committed to initiating, sustaining, and expanding widespread faculty and student engagement in COIL virtual exchange over the long term. We seek institutions that can demonstrate a strong commitment to starting or taking a program to scale, in part through dedicated human resources.

Successful COIL programs are most often led by collaborative teams bringing different capacities to the table. These teams may include a Senior International Officer or International Education leader, a high-level academic leader—such as Vice Provost or Dean—online learning professionals, instructional designers, teaching and learning center professionals, and/or faculty members.
